Super speedy and easy gnocchi with tuna, basil and gherkin. Enjoyable hot or cold. Paired with an Italian wine.

A true tribute to Italian cuisine: gnocchi with tuna and basil

Gnocchi, the soft and pillow dumplings that are beloved in Italy, are the perfect canvas for a variety of piquancy ingredients. One such recipe that is sure to be appreciated by everyone is my gnocchi with tuna and basil. This concoction is a beautiful blend of the sea and the garden, with the succulent tuna complementing the fragrant basil, miam!

Ancient Origins

The origins of gnocchi can be linked to ancient Roman times, where early versions were made from semolina flour and eggs. These dumplings were simple yet filling, making them a popular choice among peasants and soldiers alike. The word “gnocchi” itself is believed to derive from the Italian word nocca, meaning knuckle, or from the Lombard knohha, referring to a knot or walnut shape, which describes the dumpling’s form.

The hidden gem of Italian winemaking: Friuli Venezia Giulia

The perfect wine pairing for this recipe of gnocchi with tuna and basil, is a Friuli Aquileia Chardonnay (white wine) from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy. This wine is known for its bright and refreshing character, with a good acidity that balances the richness of the tuna and the creaminess of the gnocchi. The Chardonnay grape gives a rich buttery and tropical notes of pineapple, and a good minerality which pairs perfectly with the basil and the fish.

The Friuli Venezia Giulia region

The Friuli Venezia Giulia region is a little-known gem of Italian winemaking, with an opulant history and a varied terroir that produces wines that are both complex and elegant. The region is characterized by its rolling hills, which provide the perfect conditions for growing grapes. The climate is mild, with cool nights and warm days, which allows the grapes to ripen slowly and develop their full fragrance and aroma.

An harmonious balance of savours

As you take a sip of the Friuli Aquileia Chardonnay and enjoy the recipe of the soft pillow gnocchi with tuna and basil, you will be transported to the rolling hills of Italy. The aroma of the basil and the taste of the tuna will fill your senses on your palate. Paired with a glass of the crisp and refreshing Friuli Aquileia Chardonnay, my gnocchi with tuna and basil is a celebration of Italian cuisine’s simplicity.
