APPLE GRATIN
With a touch of rum, a sprinkle of cinnamon, the comforting hug of crème fraîche, prepare to be spellbound by the alchemy of my apple gratin!
The Gratin Chronicles: A Love Affair with Apples
Yes, it is official, I have earned the title of the crumbles’ Queen, and now, I proudly step into the realm of gratins. With lockdowns casting a wintry chill over our days, my kitchen became a sanctuary for the creation of heartwarming treats.
Apples, found their way into my gratin experiment. Their inherent versatility makes them the perfect demonstration for exploration. From pies to crisps, apples graciously lend their sweetness to an array of recipes. Intrigued by the challenge, I set out to transform this everyday fruit into a nice dessert.
Raising the Stakes
In my pursuit of elevating the ordinary, I introduced a trio of companions to the apples : rum, cinnamon, and crème fraîche. The result? A gratin that transcends the realms of simple apple cakes. The addition of rum imparts a spirited kick, while cinnamon adds a warm embrace of spice. Crème fraîche, with its creamy richness, becomes the comforting note that ties the ensemble together.
A Dash of History
Originally hailing from French cuisine, gratins were born as a technique to achieve a golden, crusty top layer. The term “gratin” itself comes from the French word “gratter,” meaning to scrape or grate, referencing the scraping of breadcrumbs or cheese over the dish for that delightful crust.
The Comfort of Crème Fraîche
Crème fraîche, a darling in French cuisine, plays a pivotal role in my apple gratin saga. Its velvety texture and subtle tang provide the dessert with a comforting grasp. Always, consider the transformative power of this dairy enchantment, a secret weapon in the pursuit of culinary excellence. But be warned, once you taste my apple gratin, a simple apple cake will never suffice again…
