As the holiday season approaches, the quest for a culinary dessert that effortlessly combines chic and simplicity becomes all-consuming. If you find yourself in search of a swift yet sophisticated treat for your Christmas soirée, your quest ends here. Welcome to my world of culinary delight, where I have crafted a dessert that will free up precious time for you to enjoy the festivities. Sauternes, a luscious and sweet white wine hailing from the Bordeaux region, is the star of our show…
The Rich History of Sauternes
Back in the 17th century, the Dutch held a significant presence in this wine-rich region. Notably, the Bordeaux wine dealer Focke, of German descent, played a pivotal role. It is said that Focke patiently catered to their Scandinavian clientele who had a penchant for sweeter libations. Little did they know that this patience would help shape the destiny of Sauternes.
Fast forward to the 18th century, and the Sauvage d’Yquem family, later known as Lur-Saluces, emerges as key figures in the Sauternes narrative. As owners of Châteaux d’Yquem, Saint Cricq, Filhot, and Coutet, their influence was profound. They not only selected prime vineyard locations but also introduced the finest white grape varieties. Moreover, they honed the art of choosing only the most overripe, botrytised grapes, setting the stage for Sauternes’ excellence.
Thomas Jefferson’s Pioneering Taste
In 1787, Thomas Jefferson, the future President of the United States, embarked on a journey to Bordeaux. During his visit, he was captivated by the wines of the region. So impressed was he that upon returning to America, he promptly placed an order for 85 cases of 12 bottles, including the coveted Sauternes. This historical moment further solidified Sauternes’ international reputation.
By the close of the 18th century, the fame of Sauternes had transcended borders. Its exceptional quality and distinctive sweetness had earned it recognition on the global stage. Sauternes had become synonymous with excellence.
