Memories of Genepi

As the daughter of avid skiers, Genepi was the first liquor I knew when I was a little girl. It was a fixture on the dinner table during our numerous trips to the French Alps. I remember watching my parents serve it to their guests and feeling intrigued by its unique colour. Little did I know that years later, this liquor would become a source of comfort and nostalgia for me when I found myself homesick in London.

The Alpine Origins of Genepi

Genepi, is a plant from the artemisia family, that grows in the high-altitude regions of the French, Swiss, and Italian Alps. Growing between 1500 and 3000 meters above sea level, it has been prized for its medicinal properties for centuries. In the past, mountain people would use it in the form of herbal teas to induce sweating during acute illnesses. However, as time passed, Genepi became more than just a medicinal herb, and its use evolved into something more indulgent.

The Tradition of Genepi Liqueur

One of the most popular forms of Genepi today is in the form of liqueur, which is a traditional herbal aperitif popularized in the Alpine regions of Europe. Its complex profile includes notes of pine, herbs, and honey, making it a unique and flavourful drink that is beloved by many. Despite its popularity, Genepi liqueur has a long history rooted in tradition, and it is most produced in France, Italy, and Switzerland.

The Mysterious Origins of Genepi Liqueur

Despite its widespread popularity, the age of Genepi liqueur is somewhat difficult to pin down. Some sources suggest that it has been produced for several hundred years, while others claim that it has been around for much longer. What is certain, however, is that Genepi liqueur has been an important part of Alpine culture for centuries, and its unique aroma have made it an enduring favourite among those who appreciate fine spirits.

The smell and taste of the liqueur instantly brought back memories of cosy ski lodges and warm fires. I knew I had to create a cocktail that would capture this feeling and pay homage to my beloved country I missed so much sometimes…

A Taste of the Alps in Your Glass
