Elevate your next summer meal with this refreshing and delicious smoked salmon, fresh mint, and melon salad.
An Unlikely but Delicious Pairing
The combination of sweet, juicy melon and smoky salmon may seem like an unlikely pair, but it’s a match made in heaven. I recently found myself with a lovely ripe melon on my hands and was at a loss for what to do with it. After some experimentation in the kitchen, I landed on a delightful smoked salmon, mint, and melon salad that was a hit with my friends and family.
Taking a Chance on Unusual Combinations
This dish is an excellent example of how taking a chance on a seemingly strange combination can yield unexpectedly delicious results. In fact, some of the most iconic pairings in cuisine history started out as unlikely combinations.
The sweet, juicy flesh of the melon pairs perfectly with the smoky, salty flavour of the salmon, creating a delicious contrast of textures. Adding fresh mint leaves to the mix brings a refreshing and herbaceous note to the dish, elevating the overall profile. The result is a light, salad that’s perfect for a summer lunch or dinner.
Exploring the World of Rueda Verdejo White Wine
To complement this beautiful salad, I recommend pairing it with a Rueda Verdejo white from Spain.
Rueda Verdejo is a type of white wine that hails from Spain, offering a light and refreshing body with medium-high acidity and a dry flavour profile. This exquisite wine showcases a pale straw colour in the glass, along with delicate aromas of lime, lemon, melon, grapefruit, grass, fennel, peach, and citrus blossom.
A Grape with a Rich History
Verdejo is a white grape varietal that has been prevalent in Spain for more than 1,000 years. The grape originated in North Africa and was brought to Rueda in Spain by the Mozarabs. Over the centuries, Rueda wines have become known for their crisp, clean, and refreshing qualities, with the dry white wine showcasing rich, herbaceous notes of stone fruit, melon, apricot, and peach.
The Art of Verdejo Wine Production
Wine production by local settlers and monastic orders flourished in Rueda as early as the 11th century, under the reign of King Alfonso VI. Verdejo wines were produced for centuries but were generally used to make a strongly oxidized, Sherry-like wine. Today, winemakers focus on producing subtle-yet-stunning white wines that offer complex hint of lime, Meyer lemon, grapefruit, grass, fennel, and citrus blossom.
Discovering the Delightful Rueda Verdejo
When it comes to experiencing Rueda Verdejo, expect a young wine to appear pale greenish-yellow in the glass, with flavours to match. Fennel, grassy and citrus notes are common, along with subtle undertones of apricot, peach, and melon.
