Grimolle Poitevine: A Delicious Apple Cake from the Heart of France

Welcome to the picturesque Poitou region of my beloved France, known for its stunning countryside, rolling hills, and delectable cuisine. Poitou is renowned for its abundant apple orchards, which the locals have been using to create a cherished dessert for generations: the Grimolle Poitevine (or apple cake).

A Brief History of the Grimolle Poitevine

Originally, this cake was traditionally baked in the bread oven and after the bread itself, when the ovens were still hot. The locals also used to “mix” (soften) cabbage leaves on which they poured the dough and the apples and then baked. Today, this cake is sometimes found with a slight taste of cabbage, especially at village festivals where it is traditionally baked on cabbage leaves.

Although the recipe for the Grimolle Poitevine has evolved over time, the fundamental ingredients remain the same: apples, flour, sugar, and butter. The old recipe uses only tbsp to measure the quantities of the ingredients so I do leave it that way…;).

Exploring the Rich History of Poitou

Poitou, a region located in the middle west of France, has a rich history that dates back centuries. Bordered by the Centre and Pays de la Loire regions to the north, Limousin to the east, and Aquitaine to the south, Poitou was formed in 1956 from the major part of the old Poitou area plus three departments from Charente. It is now part of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, one of the country’s most beautiful regions.

From battles to provinces

Poitou has played a significant role in shaping France’s history. The region has been the site of several famous battles, including the Battle of Vouillé in 507, Charles Martel’s victory over the Muslims in 732, the Anglo-French Battle of Poitiers in 1356, and the Battle of Moncontour in 1569. These battles were instrumental in shaping the region’s identity and culture.

A Region of Rich Culture and Historical Significance

Poitou is composed of historical provinces such as Angoumois, Aunis, Saintonge, and Poitou itself. Each of these provinces has a unique identity and history that contributes to the richness of the region. In addition to its provinces, Poitou was formerly an administrative region encompassing the western departments of Vienne, Charente, Charente-Maritime, and Deux-Sèvres.

During World War II, Poitou played a significant role in the French Resistance. Free French soldiers and members of the Resistance fought for its liberation, which helped pave the way for the region’s development and growth in the post-war era. Today, Poitou continues to thrive as a beautiful and culturally rich region of France.

In 2019, Poitou was merged with Charente and Charente-Maritime to create an administrative region called Poitou-Charentes. Despite this change, the region’s historical significance and cultural richness remain intact, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in French history and culture.
