A Taste of South-West France: The Périgourdine Aperitif Planche
If you are looking to add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your next gathering, look no further than the Périgourdine aperitif planche. This delightful selection of sweets and salted products from the South-West region of France is sure to impress your guests.
The Historical Significance of Périgord in French Cuisine
Périgord, a region steeped in history and culture, has played a significant role in shaping French cuisine. Located in southern France, Périgord encompasses the Dordogne and part of Lot-et-Garonne departments. The region is renowned for its culinary delights, especially its duck and goose products such as confit de canard and foie gras.
The Culinary Treasures of Périgord
The gastronomic treasures of Périgord are famous throughout the world. One of the most popular delicacies from the region is the confit de canard (I love it so much), a dish of preserved duck that is cooked in its own fat and then stored for later use.
Périgord is also famous for being a centre for truffles. These prized delicacies are harvested from the oak and hazelnut forests of the region, and are often used in dish such as truffle omelettes for example.
The Beauty of Dordogne Department
The Dordogne department is in the new Aquitaine region. With its rolling hills, lush forests, and picturesque towns, it is a popular destination for tourists looking to experience the beauty of my rural country. Covering 9,060 square kilometres, it is the third most forested department in France, with 45% of its territory covered with forests.
The Charm of Small Towns in Périgord
In Périgord, you will find small towns and villages that have retained their historic charm. While Périgueux and Bergerac are the region’s largest towns, no other town has more than 20,000 inhabitants. These smaller towns are where you will find the region’s best markets and local producers.
My little selection
My Périgourdine aperitif planche is a true feast for the senses, featuring a wide variety of savoury delights. I have put a selection of cured meats, such as duck rillettes, duck breasts, Rosette from Lyon and jambon de Bayonne, is sure to please any meat lover. The planche also includes a variety of cheeses, such as Roquefort, and my iconic rocamadour…
A Touch of Sweetness
No French aperitif would be complete without a touch of sweetness. my Périgourdine planche includes a variety of sweet treats, such as grapes, cherry jam (to go with the cheese) and walnut biscuits.
The Perfect Wine Pairing
In the South-West region of France, the wine of choice is often a full-bodied red wine, such as a Cahors or Madiran. These wines pair perfectly with the cured meats and cheeses, and the sweetness of the fruits.
My Personal Touch
As someone who has spent all my childhood near Rocamadour, the Périgourdine planche holds a special place in my heart. It is a true celebration of my region’s culinary heritage, and a board that never fails to be enjoyed by my family and friends…
