CULINARY TOUR DE FRANCE – GRAND EST – (LORRAINE)

Let’s go now to the next area of the Grand Est, the Lorraine! This region is located in the north east of France on the border with Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium. Its four departments (Meurthe-et-Moselle, Moselle, Meuse and Vosges) are centred around the two main cities which are Nancy and Metz . The province is bordered to the east by the  Vosges mountain range which separates it from its neighbour, the Alsace .

The culinary specialities I will propose you today are :
* Mirabelles chicken,
* Quiche Lorraine,
* Nancy cake with almond and chocolate.

This little yellowish fruit was reportedly brought to Europe from China in the 15th century by the Duke of Anjou and Lorraine, René Ier.

Mirabelle takes its name from the Latin “mirabilis” which means “beautiful to see”.

The word “quiche” comes from the German “Kuchen” which means cake and is the origin of all savoury pies. The quiche Lorraine is the iconic Lorraine’s recipe. It has been served on tables since at least the 16th century. Duke Charles III was very fond of it.

The story behind this very simple chocolate and almond cake seems to take place in the 17th century, This gateau was prepared by the sisters of the Visitandines order in Nancy…
