Crème Dubarry: A Tribute to the Infamous Dubarry Countess
As you may have guessed from its name, the Crème Dubarry is a tribute to the famous Dubarry Countess, née Jeanne Becu. This intriguing woman was the favourite of King Louis XV many years after the death of his former beloved, La Pompadour. Coming from a family of foodies, the countess was said to have a particular fondness for cauliflower, which is the key ingredient in this delectable potage.
The Crème Dubarry is a veloute that embodies the spirit of its namesake. Whether served as a first course or a main dish, this creamy potage is sure to transport your taste buds back to a bygone era.
A Glittering Star in French Royal History
Madame du Barry was the last official mistress of King Louis XV of France. Born as Jeanne Bécu in 1743, she rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most powerful and influential women in the French court.
Despite facing opposition from the French nobility and court, Madame du Barry became a close confidante and advisor to King Louis XV, influencing his decisions and playing a significant role in the politics of the time.
The Spark of Controversy
She was famous for her beauty, charm, and wit, and was often the subject of paintings and portraits. Her extravagant lifestyle and association with the King made her a controversial figure, but she remained a central figure in the French court until the King’s death in 1774.
After the fall of the French monarchy, Madame du Barry was arrested and sentenced to death during the Reign of Terror. She was executed by guillotine in 1793.
Despite her tumultuous life and legacy, Madame du Barry remains a fascinating figure in French history, known for her rise from humble beginnings to become a central figure in the French court.
