Palmiers: A French treat That Knows No Boundaries
Living in London for so many years, if there is one thing I am sure of it’s that food has the power to transport people to different places and times. In this sense, my little palmiers are no exception. I miss so much these iconic French pastries when I am in London, but with a good puff pastry, I can enjoy them whenever I wish and sometimes with a lovely salted or sweet filling. As a snack or at the end of a meal, those palmiers are a gem!
The Origins of Palmiers
Palmiers are a classic French pastry that has been enjoyed for a long time. Also known as elephant ears or pig ears. It is commonly thought that these delightful treats were invented in France around the beginning of the 20th century though there is no documented evidence to support this. The pastry is believed to have been adopted from Middle Eastern methods of layering thin sheets of dough.
A Perfect Treat for Any Occasion
Palmiers are an incredibly versatile pastry. Whether you’re looking for a sweet or savoury treat, palmiers are a perfect choice. They can be served as a snack or as a dessert, and their light and flaky texture make them an ideal pairing with tea or coffee. The fact that they are so easy to make only adds to their appeal.
Palmiers with a Twist
While traditional palmiers are made with just sugar and butter, they can also be filled with other ingredients to give them a unique twist. Some popular filling options include chocolate, cinnamon, and nuts. For those who prefer savoury fillings like pesto, cheese, and prosciutto can be used. I did mine with tapenade, a real delight! The possibilities are endless, and there is no right or wrong way to make palmiers.
Bite into French Tradition
So, go ahead and treat yourself to a batch of homemade palmiers, and enjoy them with a cup of tea or coffee. After all, as the French say, “La vie est trop courte pour ne pas manger de bons desserts” (Life is too short not to eat good desserts).
