RED FRUIT SALAD WITH ESPELETTE PEPPER

Spice up your life (and your red fruit salad) with the nice kick and subtle sweetness of piment d’Espelette.

Adding Some Spice to Your Fruit Salad

After months of making countless fruit salads, I found myself struggling to come up with something unique and flavourful. That is when I decided to add a little spice to my recipe, quite literally! As someone who loves to experiment  in the kitchen, it was only natural that I turned to one of my favourite spices from my beloved France :  piment d’Espelette or Espelette pepper.

I am used to this lovely spice in my cooking and especially in my chocolate coulant, so going for the fruit salad was very easy indeed…

Hailing from the Basque region of France, Espelette pepper (Ezpeletako Biperra), is a cherished ingredient that adds a distinctive kick and aroma to any dish it is added to. While it does pack a bit of heat, it is never overwhelming and has a lovely floral fragrance with a hint of sweetness that makes it a perfect addition to desserts, savoury dishes, and yes, even fruit salads.

The History of Espelette Pepper

Christopher Columbus is credited with introducing chili peppers to Europe in the 16th century, and over time, these spicy peppers found their way to different parts of the continent. In the 17th century, the Basque region of France became a popular destination for chili peppers, thanks to its similar climate to Mexico. The locals soon began cultivating the peppers and using them in their traditional dishes. This led to the development of Espelette pepper, which has since become an emblem of the region.

The Unique Profile of Espelette Pepper

Espelette pepper has a unique profile that sets it apart from other chili peppers. Its heat level is lower than that of cayenne or jalapeño peppers, making it more approachable for those who are not fans of spicy food. The floral aroma of the pepper is reminiscent of violets and is complemented by a subtle sweetness.

Adding Espelette Pepper to Your Fruit Salad

If you are looking to add a touch of sophistication and complexity to your fruit salad, then consider using Espelette pepper. Not only will it add a bit of heat, but it will also enhance the flavour of the fruits and give the salad a delightful aroma.

While piment d’Espelette may not be readily available in your local grocery store, you can easily substitute it with any other chili pepper. However, if you can get your hands on some Espelette pepper, I highly recommend giving it a try…

The delightful kick of Espelette pepper

If you have liked this lovely spice, why not trying it in new recipes?

Enjoy with a delightful tuna rillette or my exquisite chocolate coulant with Espelette pepper…
